Our verdict

Chatwork's features are unremarkable, but its penetration in Japanese business is decisive: when dealing with a Japanese client, they will often send nothing but a Chatwork link. Task lists, read receipts and file management cover daily needs. The interface has not moved in a decade, and that is its clearest weakness.

Pros

  • The default tool for communicating with Japanese clients
  • Read receipts and task management are practical
  • The free plan can be used long term

Cons

  • Dated interface, slow mobile app
  • Far fewer integrations than Slack
  • Weak on large files and search

FAQ

Is there a free plan?
Yes — the Free for 5 users tier stays free. Enough for individuals and teams up to five; move to ¥550/user/mo when you outgrow it.
Is it reachable from mainland China?
Not guaranteed. Reachability from mainland China is unstable; confirm network and compliance before rolling it out.
Are the UI and docs in Chinese?
The UI can switch to Simplified Chinese; docs and community content are mostly English.
Which platforms does Chatwork support?
It covers Web / macOS / Windows / iOS / Android. Accounts sync across clients, so a mixed macOS/Windows team keeps the same setup.
What are the best Chatwork alternatives?
The usual comparisons are Miro, ClickUp, Airtable. Miro has a free tier, which is the cheapest way to start; The comparison table below lines up pricing and free quotas.
Can I export my data?
Most plans export CSV / JSON. Check that the export entry is open to your plan before you commit — it keeps history from getting stuck in an old workspace.
